FSTN Segment LCD Display for Temperature, Humidity, and Pressure Meters – QYF2968

The FSTN Segment LCD Display QYF2968 is a high-quality 8-segment LCD screen designed for applications such as temperature, humidity, and pressure meters. This display offers excellent readability, flexibility, and durability, making it an ideal choice for various industrial and consumer electronics. Below, we provide a detailed introduction to its features and usage guidelines to help you better understand and select the right product for your needs.

1. Display Modes: Reflective, Transflective, and Transmissive
The QYF2968 LCD screen is available in three display modes: Reflective, Transflective, and Transmissive. Each mode has unique characteristics to suit different application scenarios:

Reflective Mode:
The lower polarizer is opaque, so it cannot be used with a backlight. This mode is suitable for environments with sufficient external light, such as outdoor or well-lit indoor settings. Its advantage is higher contrast under ambient light.

Transmissive Mode:
With a light transmittance of approximately 40%, this mode requires a backlight to function effectively. Without a backlight, the underlying components or PCB may be visible. The key advantage is its high brightness when paired with a backlight.

Transflective Mode:
This mode strikes a balance between reflective and transmissive modes, offering around 30% light transmittance. It can be used with or without a backlight, providing greater flexibility in various lighting conditions.

How to Choose?

Use Reflective Mode for applications with ample ambient light.

Choose Transmissive Mode for low-light environments where a backlight is available.

Opt for Transflective Mode for versatile applications requiring adaptability to changing light conditions.

2. Driving Methods: Static vs. Dynamic
The QYF2968 LCD supports two driving methods: Static Drive and Dynamic Drive.

Static Drive:
This method uses a single common terminal (COM) with each pixel having a separate electrode. It offers superior display quality compared to dynamic drive but requires more pins, making it suitable for simpler displays with fewer segments.

Dynamic Drive:
This method employs multiple common terminals (COM), with each electrode controlling at least two pixels. It uses time-division scanning to drive the display. While it reduces the number of pins required, it is more complex to implement and is typically used for more intricate displays.

How to Differentiate?

Static-driven LCDs have only one COM pin.

Dynamic-driven LCDs have two or more COM pins.

3. Driving LCD Segment Displays: AC vs. DC
The QYF2968 LCD operates on AC (Alternating Current) driving, which is fundamentally different from the DC driving used in LED displays.

LED Displays:
LED segments are driven by direct current (DC), with common terminals connected to either the anode (common anode) or cathode (common cathode).

LCD Displays:
LCDs require AC driving, where both the common terminal (COM) and segment terminals are supplied with alternating square wave signals. The display controls pixel visibility by altering the phase relationship between these signals. Unlike LEDs, LCDs do not have common anode or cathode configurations.
Important Note: Never connect the COM terminal directly to ground or drive segments with a constant high voltage, as this can damage the LCD over time.

4. Direct Microcontroller Driving
The QYF2968 LCD can be driven directly by a microcontroller under certain conditions:

Static Drive LCDs:
If the microcontroller has sufficient I/O pins, it can directly drive a static LCD. This method is straightforward and requires minimal additional components.

Dynamic Drive LCDs:
Due to the complexity of time-division scanning and the need for precise bias voltage waveforms, dynamic LCDs are generally not suitable for direct microcontroller driving. While some designs use resistor voltage dividers to simulate bias voltages, this approach is cumbersome and often results in suboptimal display performance.
Recommendation: Use dedicated LCD driver ICs like the HT1621, which features a simple 3-wire SPI interface, low cost, and ease of programming.

Key Features of QYF2968
High Contrast and Readability: Suitable for a wide range of lighting conditions.

Flexible Driving Options: Supports both static and dynamic driving methods.

Durable and Reliable: Designed for long-term operation in demanding environments.

Wide Application: Ideal for temperature, humidity, and pressure meters, as well as other industrial and consumer devices.

Conclusion
The FSTN Segment LCD Display QYF2968 is a versatile and high-performance solution for various measurement and display applications. With its multiple display modes, flexible driving options, and compatibility with dedicated driver ICs, it ensures optimal performance and ease of integration. Whether you need a reflective display for outdoor use or a transmissive display with backlight support, the QYF2968 delivers exceptional quality and reliability.
